Emotional and Behavioral Disorders in the Classroom

Emotional and behavioral disorders, or EBDs, act as a general term for any number of disorders that can atypically affect a child’s behavior. The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) helps define emotional disturbances while helping professionals in education to understand how these disorders manifest. Students who qualify under the specifications of these disorders can receive numerous educational benefits, including scholarship opportunities.

EBD is the fourth largest disability under the IDEA system. It is reported that the parents of more than 8 million children have spoken with school staff or advisers about their children’s emotional needs. As a result, more than 3 million children have received the help and medication they need. When these needs are addressed, children can enjoy a much more complete scholastic experience, interacting with their peers and learning what they need to pursue their futures.
