BS in Respiratory Therapy: Admission Requirements

The BS in Respiratory Therapy degree offered through Cincinnati Online requires a total of 120 earned semester credit hours for graduation. Up to 70 of these hours may be transferred to Cincinnati Online from an eligible associate degree in respiratory care/respiratory therapy (see below).  

Students applying with an associate degree that consists of less than 70 earned semester credit hours will be required to take additional coursework via the Respiratory Therapy Open Online Course, supplemental UC distance courses or an alternative source. Speak with an enrollment advisor about how your credits may transfer to learn more about your options for completing additional required coursework.

Students may start the program but are required to complete these courses within one year of entering the program. Average time to complete this program is 20 months.

Eligible applicants to the Cincinnati Online Bachelor of Science in Respiratory Therapy must:

  • Complete the online UC application and pay $50 fee at

  • Hold an associate’s degree from a CoARC-accredited respiratory care/respiratory therapy program at a regionally accredited institution.

  • Be credentialed by the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC) as a Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT)* or a Certified Respiratory Therapist (CRT) who is RRT eligible.** CRT’s must be credentialed as a Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) before matriculating into the capstone course

  • Have earned a minimum GPA of 2.5

  • Submit official transcripts for all schools attended*** to:

*RRT eligible students have passed the NBRC Therapist Multiple Choice exam at the high-cut score within the past 3-years.

**This program includes the Kettering RRT Home Study for CRTs as well as RRT exam reimbursement provided for CRTs.

***If a student has graduated from a CoARC-accredited respiratory therapy program that is not regionally accredited, transcripts will be reviewed to determine if all general education requirements have been met.

Articulation Agreements

If you attend one of the following schools, you may be able to transfer to Cincinnati Online more easily. The Online Respiratory Therapy program has articulation agreements with:

  • Columbus State Community College
  • Harrisburg Area Community College
  • Southeast Community College
  • Ivy Tech Community College
  • Massasoit Community College 
  • San Juan College.

An Articulation Agreement defines a relationship between two institutions of higher education that enables students to more easily transfer from their former institution to the University of Cincinnati.
