What is Pharmacogenomics?

Pharmacogenomics is the study of how a person’s genes can affect their response to drugs. This relatively new field combines pharmacology (the science of drugs) and genomics (the study of genes and their functions) to develop effective, safe medications and doses that will be tailored to a person’s genetic makeup.

When diagnostic data is combined with an individual’s specific medical history, health care providers can better understand how that person’s genes will respond to certain drugs/treatments and can thus develop a targeted treatment plan.

The Masters of Pharmaceutical Sciences: Pharmacogenomics and Personalized Healthcare at UC Online can help you learn the effects of genomics, the environment, and patient-specific factors on drug response, all of which allow for individualized therapy and optimal clinical outcomes.

Our pharmacogenomics program, led by professors with real-world experience, is a great next step for those with backgrounds in allied health, biology, chemistry, nursing, genetic research, and similar fields.

Growing Careers in Pharmacogenomics

A pharmacogenomics and personalized healthcare degree covers a variety of high-skill positions that require a master’s degree. From geneticist to research technologist and from data scientist to clinical pharmacist, an MS degree online can help to achieve career and leadership goals while increasing income with above-average salaries.

Pharmacogenomics Specialist

A pharmacogenomics specialist would specifically study the effects of medications on a person’s genes.

The average salary for a pharmacogenomics specialist is about $92,940.

Geneticist

A geneticist is someone with a biology degree who studies genetics, gene science, hereditary traits/disease, and more. A person who holds this title might either have a masters in pharmacogenomics, a PhD in genetics, or is a physician who was trained in genetics.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), the average salary for a geneticist is similar to that of a genetic counselor, in that you can earn up to $81,880 per year in a university medical center, private or public hospital, or similar job sites.

Senior Scientist

A senior scientist works as a professional in the field of research. You might work in a lab on a project and have other scientists who work under you or you might oversee doctoral students’ dissertations or teaching classes (if you’re working in an academic setting).

The BLS notes that the average salary for a senior scientist working in a lab can be as high as $88,790 per year.

Data Scientist

A data scientist uses scientific methods, processes, systems, and algorithms to analyze actual phenomena from structural and unstructured data.

The average salary for a data scientist in the scientific research and development services field is about $106,720.

Molecular Sales Consultant

Specialized consultants combine their experience in Pharmacogenomics and business development to provide support to existing businesses growing in personalized medicine and healthcare fields.

Current molecular sales consultants noted salary ranges of an average of $51,158 in the United States to as high as $108,000 across all industries, experience, and company sizes.

Clinical Genomics Curator

Curators maintain and develop documentation on global, federal, and association guidelines on the clinical significance of genomics-related research in medicine and healthcare.

Individuals working in curation, or specifically Curation Scientists disclosed their current salaries averaged around $92,000 in the United States with some noting salaries as high as $155,000.
