Working Mom and Military Wife Proves Earning an MBA Can Fit Into a Busy Life

Amanda Cardoso Moyeno is a great example of someone who doesn’t make excuses — she certainly hasn’t let anything slow her down or get in the way of her goals.

As an undergrad, the creative and adventurous Brazilian-American studied Business Administration at Faculdade Visconde de Cairu (FVC), Salvador, Bahia, Brazil. At 29, she’s now a mom, works as a Social Media Marketing Manager, and has launched two online businesses, all while moving frequently. In the midst of it all, she chose to go back to school for her MBA — and she has successfully worked the program into her already busy life.

The Online Experience

Moyeno talks about pursuing her MBA and how the online program differs from her previous experience with learning in person. “We’re a military family and we move to a new place every one to two years. This MBA program through the Lindner College of Business at The University of Cincinnati has been great for me because it allows me the freedom to keep studying and provides me the opportunity to invest in myself and my family.”

Benefits of Online Learning

“The program not only aligns perfectly with my lifestyle, it provides the high-quality education that I wanted from an online MBA program. I’ve actually experienced less stress learning online than I did in the classroom as an undergrad student. That doesn’t mean there was less work to do — I spent about 15 hours per week on my MBA — it was just more practical.”

Amanda says her favorite part of being in UC Online’s MBA program has been the ability to study anywhere and the flexibility that accommodates nontraditional graduate students.

She says so far, she wouldn’t change a thing about the experience and notes that online learning through UC allowed her “the chance to interact with incredible people,” which came as a pleasant surprise.

Words of Wisdom

Regarding her best piece of advice for thriving in an online MBA program, Moyeno thoughtfully shares what she’s learned. “Be organized, remember all your due dates, read the announcements, and read the syllabus. Always hit the bottom “To Do” on Canvas to check if you are missing any assignments.”

Professional Impact

Amanda reflects on how UC Online’s program has given her a professional boost. “My online education helped me a lot in my current job with the Fort Hamilton Community Spouses’ Foundation (FHSCF). The marketing courses I’ve taken in particular—they’ve helped me tremendously.”

Higher Education Nets Promotion

When Moyeno started working at the foundation’s thrift store, she worked in social media advertising. While working towards her MBA, she was able to leverage some of what she learned to move up in the organization. She proudly explains what led to her new role.

“I planned and executed a 30-day social media marketing campaign that made my foundation’s thrift store more visible, which led to an increase in foot traffic and revenue. Thanks to that success, I was promoted as our foundation’s Social Media Chair and Social Media Marketing Manager.”

Looking to the future, she knows exactly where she wants to go from here. “My ultimate long-term professional goal is to become an E-commerce Marketing Director.”
