Empowered to Succeed: Xiomara’s Fieldwork Journey in the Online Social Work Program

A Path to Social Work

Xiomara, a student from Oberlin, Ohio, chose to pursue a Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) through the University of Cincinnati Online because of the program’s strong reputation and the flexibility it offered. As a working professional with family responsibilities, she needed a program that could adapt to her busy schedule.

The online BSW program at UC stood out for its comprehensive curriculum, dedicated faculty, and the unique way it integrates fieldwork, even for students located far from campus.

Preparation for Fieldwork

Before starting the program, Xiomara was both excited and apprehensive about the fieldwork component, which is a cornerstone of the UC’s online BSW program. Fieldwork is designed to provide students with hands-on experience in a real-world social work setting, preparing them for the complexities of the profession. However, balancing fieldwork hours with work and family was a concern for Xiomara. “I was anxious, and a bit afraid of not being able to complete my hours since I also worked and had a family to take care of,” she recalls.

The program’s coursework laid a strong foundation for Xiomara, equipping her with essential knowledge in social policies, behavioral science, and human rights. The professors were key in this preparation, offering not only academic guidance but also personal support. “The professors were outstanding, offering support and clear communication every step of the way,” Xiomara notes. UC’s online BSW program also stands out for its robust support system, which includes resources such as academic advisors and a fieldwork placement team that helps students secure placements no matter where they live.

Fieldwork Experience

Xiomara began her fieldwork at a mental health center that caters to a wide range of clients, a placement thoughtfully arranged by UC’s fieldwork team to align with her career aspirations.

“I was placed at a mental health center that serves a variety of ages. I was initially overwhelmed, but I had excellent mentors, and they helped me to gain confidence to be able to overcome my own fears,” Xiomara recalls. Throughout her placement, she managed a caseload and worked closely with clinicians, engaging in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) sessions and focusing on outcomes. Weekly supervision meetings provided her with guidance and the chance to discuss challenges in her role.

The BSW program’s fieldwork is designed to grow with the student’s development, and Xiomara’s experience reflects this. As her skills and understanding deepened, so did her responsibilities, which led to increased confidence. One of the moments that stood out to her was witnessing a client make significant progress. “One of my clients was overwhelmed with anxiety and depression, but I saw progress to the point where he was able to get employment and improve his mental health,” she shares.

Skills Development

The fieldwork experience in UC’s online BSW program is not just about gaining practical experience—it’s about developing the critical skills needed to succeed in social work. Throughout her fieldwork, Xiomara honed essential skills such as effective communication, resourcefulness, and confidence in conducting sessions and taking notes. She also learned how to navigate the challenges of the profession, such as managing a caseload and documenting client interactions efficiently.

“Fieldwork was imperative in understanding this field. It enriched my desire to continue in this field,” Xiomara says. The program’s emphasis on combining academic knowledge with practical application helped her to fully grasp the realities of social work practice and reinforced her commitment to the profession.

Advice for Future Students

Xiomara has valuable advice for future BSW students: staying focused and proactive is key, especially when unexpected challenges arise. “Work ahead just in case an emergency arises,” she recommends. While she acknowledges that the first fieldwork placement can be daunting, Xiomara believes it is equally rewarding and enjoyable.

To get the most out of the experience, she urges students to be curious and seek guidance whenever necessary. “Don’t be afraid to ask questions. The more you ask, the more you learn,” she emphasizes.

Looking Forward

As she prepares to take her licensing test, Xiomara reflects on how fieldwork has been a transformative part of her education. The experience not only provided her with valuable skills but also with encouragement from her supervisors. “Fieldwork not only taught me a lot but also my supervisors have been extremely encouraging,” she says. This experience has inspired her to consider furthering her education, potentially pursuing an MSW program.

The BSW program at the University of Cincinnati Online has been a pivotal part of Xiomara’s journey, offering the flexibility she needed and the comprehensive education required to succeed in social work. The program’s integration of fieldwork and strong support system has equipped her with the skills and confidence needed for a successful career in social work, and she is excited for what the future holds.
