What is a Principal?

To be effective school principals, educators need to possess an array of skills and leadership attributes that cannot be learned or developed in isolation from real-world experience. In addition, aspiring principals must master a host of legal and administrative duties and gain familiarity with state and local policies.

A principal is an education professional who has decided to take an administrative role in the school or school district. A principal could expect to handle the following situations:

  • Budgets for the school or corporation
  • Relationships and issues with parents, students, and faculty
  • Managing, training, and supervising school faculty
  • Interpreting and implementing regulations and standards set by the government
  • Participating in groups such as governing bodies and the academic board

The Graduate Certificate in Principal Licensure program is intended for teachers who have already earned a Master’s degree from an accredited institution and have been working for at least two years at an instructional level in elementary or secondary school classrooms.

Full-time faculty members from the University of Cincinnati Online teach courses that complement the online experience with hands-on opportunities and real-world challenges. Students are expected to become familiar with the roles and responsibilities of the principal, lead the planning, implementation, evaluation, and reporting of a project designed to improve education in a school, and reflect upon her/his leadership, seeking meaningful improvement as an educational leader.
