Why study Public Health?

Public health is the science of preventing disease, prolonging life, and promoting the health of people and communities through organized efforts to educate, develop policy, conduct scientific research and regulate health systems. The Public Health Associates degree offers a versatile education that examines emerging issues in public health, the social and behavioral aspects of preventing disease, environmental health concepts, the changing U.S. health care system, and the monitoring of diseases in the community. This online associates degree program was designed to seamlessly transition to the University of Cincinnati Interdisciplinary Bachelors of Public Health degree.

Admission Requirements

Admission into the University of Cincinnati’s online Associate of Science in Public Health is open to all students with a high school diploma or GED and the desire to succeed in college. Although admission is open, students accepted into the program must meet the academic standards of the program to advance to upper levels of study.

As a first-year student, you will need to take an English and mathematics placement test if you have not obtained the minimum ACT/SAT score required for exemption. These tests do not affect your admission; however, the results are essential for your proper placement in classes. You must complete placement tests before you register for English or mathematics courses. All placement tests are given free of charge.

Public Health students must be good communicators and like working with people. They need to be able to comfortably speak to individuals and groups and must have excellent writing skills. Furthermore, those majoring in public health are usually committed to their own health and are excited about helping others improve theirs. Creativity is a real plus for public health workers, as it often takes creative thinking to motivate and help individuals or communities to change health behaviors.

Careers in public health can range from improving access to healthcare, controlling infectious disease, reducing environmental hazards, designing healthier cities, to working towards decreasing substance abuse.  Professionals in public health work in a variety of settings such as:

  • Healthcare organizations
  • Health insurance companies
  • Retail organizations
  • Educational institutions
  • Government roles within the health department or in disaster readiness

Academic advising is an essential part of your educational experience.  An institutional representative will provide insight or direction about an academic, social or personal matter.  The nature of this direction might be to inform, suggest, counsel, discipline, coach, mentor, or even teach a college student how to navigate university systems to be successful.

We are committed to providing advice and assistance throughout your academic journey. As a result, you will be assigned a Program Advisor as well as a Program Retention Specialist.  These individuals will work with you to create an academic plan based on your own personal and educational goals.
