This course examines the non-technical factors that enable engineers and other technical professionals to maximize their contribution to organizational effectiveness. The course covers communication processes and impediments to effective communication including written communication, presentations, and meeting facilitation. Models of motivation as regards technical professionals are presented and their application to the work setting are examined. Leadership models and the interaction of leaders and followers are also presented. Conflict management and appropriate methods for constructively dealing with this are discussed. Students develop personal development plans for continued learning and performance improvement.

In an attempt to become more competitive, industry is looking for individuals that understand how to both problem solve and eliminate waste within an organization.  Although lean six-sigma is associated with manufacturing, the principles can also be applied to any process, eliminating the 8 types of waste:

Examines the processes and the techniques used to ensure quality of an item, a system, a process, oran engineering endeavor. The topics of total quality management, statistical process control, and quality systems are explored. Also, the historical development and current trends in quality are examined.

Introduction to Applied Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning Tools

This course is designed for professionals who already have basic knowledge of Python programming and basic algorithms, but are looking to refresh their knowledge and expand their hands-on skills on recent Machine Learning tools. Students will be introduced to popular AI techniques conceptually and will learn to evaluate the performance of the algorithms themselves, taking advantage of the latest tools available. Furthermore, they will learn how to adapt and customize the algorithms on new problems reviewing examples. Supervised learning techniques (regression, classification, neural networks and SVM), unsupervised learning techniques (clustering, SOM, PCA) and anomaly detection algorithms will be covered.

Industry 4.0 (I4.0) is characterized by: Increased automation, bridging of the physical and digital world through cyber-physical systems, Industrial IoT, access to data and use of that data to drive decisions and AI and machine learning to improve processes. Industry 5.0 is not another revolution but a complementary approach that includes a focus on implementing strategies that enable sustainability and resilience.  Additionally, the call to elevate people and culture has become a focal point for organizations and policymakers alike. Implementing Industry 4.0 technologies and processes is a daunting task, and many businesses can get stuck due to the overwhelming nature of the required expertise and the fear of failure. Effective implementation requires not only technical expertise but also a reinvention of leadership models and company culture.

Intelligent Systems Theory 

This is a course for students in their first or second year of their graduate studies and for undergraduate students in the senior year. This course introduces and analyzes intelligent systems used in flexible manufacturing systems. The coursework includes expert systems, fuzzy logic, neural networks and applications with intelligent systems in manufacturing and material handling. The student's understanding gained from this course will be evaluated by a midterm and final exams, homework assignments and a course project.

  • Applicants must possess an engineering bachelors’ degree from a regionally and ABET accredited college/university.
    • Bachelor’s degree preferably in the area of Electrical/Mechanical/Robotics Engineering
    • Applicants with a background in the following areas may also be considered:
      • Similar Engineering Disciplines
      • Physical Science
    • Overall minimum undergraduate GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale (recommended)
    • GRE- GRE scores are required to be submitted if:
      • Applicant’s bachelor’s degree is from a non-ABET accredited program.
      • Applicant’s bachelor’s GPA is below a 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.
      • Applicant is an International Student with a bachelor’s degree earned outside of the United States.

Students who have received degrees from the University of Cincinnati do not need to submit official paper copies of their UC transcripts.

Transfer Credits

You may transfer up to one third of the credits of the program, about 9 credits credit hours of graduate courses from a regionally accredited college or university. These credits must have been earned within the last five years prior to admission and be approved by the program faculty.

Transferring from one graduate program to join another at UC, all UC graduate credits taken as part of the incomplete program or under a certificate are eligible to use to fulfill requirements in the new program, based on faculty evaluation of the equivalence to courses in the new curriculum and program approval.

One letter of recommendation is required.

  • Recommendations should come from individuals who can attest to your academic and professional skills. References from current and former employers are always desirable. Additionally, recommendations from contacts within academia or professional organizations you’re involved in are also desirable.
  • The writing letter should explain who they are, their relationship to the applicant, and what they know of the applicant’s academic and professional abilities.
  • Letters of recommendation from family, friends or current students are not accepted.
  • Recommendations are submitted by the recommender themselves; they cannot be completed or submitted by the applicant or another party on behalf of the reference.

Professional Resume:

A resume relevant to academic and professional data. It should include the applicant’s name; phone; email; colleges attended with degrees, dates conferred, and grade point average; employment history; professional experience; present employer; and names of references.

Curriculum Vitae:

A detailed look at the applicant’s career path, including achievements, publications, and awards. Including comprehensive information about candidate’s research background, presentations, publications, committee memberships and other experience of an academic, clinical, or scientific nature.

Official Graduate Record Exam (GRE) scores are not required, unless the applicant:

  • Did not graduate with a four-year bachelor’s degree from an ABET-accredited undergraduate engineering or engineering technology program from an institution located in the United States OR
  • Did not achieve a GPA of 3.0 or higher.

International students are required to provide specific information about their transcripts and requirements for applicants whose native language is not English.

  • Transcripts must have an evaluation completed from a member of the National Association of Credential Evaluation Services (NACES).
  • GRE scores are required.

The University of Cincinnati's online course fees differ depending on the program. On average, students will accrue fewer fees than students attending on-campus classes.

The one fee applied across all UC Online programs is the distance learning fee. Students living outside the state of Ohio must also pay an additional “non-resident” fee to enroll in courses at UC Online. This fee is lower than the out-of-state fee for traditional on-campus programs.
