Meet an Interdisciplinary Studies Graduate

Like many students who enter college straight from high school, Cody struggled to find the focus to finish his degree. Later in life, Cody’s family gave him the motivation he needed. He enrolled in the online Associate of Individualized Study in Interdisciplinary Studies (AIS) program through the University of Cincinnati, allowing him to use those previously earned credits towards a degree that would open doors for a good career with a healthy work-life balance.

Read on to hear from Cody about why he chose to pursue an AIS degree, how it has moved him closer to his educational and career goals, and his advice for anyone considering going back to school.

What motivated you to continue your education through the AIS degree program?

My biggest motivations were my family, a lack of job opportunities, and the many existing credits I had earned when I first started college.

Before enrolling in the AIS program, I was making great money working in the car business as a finance manager, but my work hours were long and unpredictable, requiring me to sometimes work more than twelve hours a day and weekends. Many other jobs that I wanted to apply for and knew I would excel at required a college degree.

Getting my degree opened many doors and provides me with the ability to find a job with a better work-life balance. Family comes before everything, and I want to be present.

What are your goals for your career or education? How has the AIS program helped you get closer to achieving your goal(s)?

After completing my associate degree, I enrolled in UC Online’s Bachelor of Technical and Applied Studies program. The game plan is to go into medical sales as I’m earning my bachelor’s degree. The AIS program helped me get back into the rhythm of taking classes while working.

What is a favorite memory or proud moment you experienced during your time in the program?

Making the dean’s list. It was the first time I had ever made the dean’s list or honors of any kind. It’s still hanging on my fridge today.

Who would you recommend this program to?

I would recommend this program to anyone who didn’t finish college on their first attempt. The first time I started college at UC, I was immature, unfocused, and careless. I didn’t make good decisions — I skipped classes and ultimately dropped out. This program allowed me to combine my existing programs better than anything else available and I was able to continue working while finishing my education.

Do you have any advice for students considering the AIS program?

My best advice is to never give up and don’t be afraid to take chances. It’s never too late to do something great.
