Laboratory Scientist Finishes his Degree at UC Online From Another State and Reaches New Heights

Finishing a college degree is an achievement worthy of celebration, especially if you were able to do so while working out of state. That’s the case with Cory Eldon, who recently graduated with a Master of Science in Medical Laboratory Science Leadership (MS-MLSL) from the University of Cincinnati Online. Cory tells us that he was able to secure a promotion at his job thanks to his medical laboratory science leadership degree and is encouraging others to take the same steps he did!

UC Online caught up with Cory to get the details of his story after graduation.

What motivated you to seek this program with UC Online over other institutions?

I wanted to learn tools that I could use to become a more effective leader for my team.

I was looking for a program that would help me specifically with my skills as a laboratory leader in healthcare. This program also offered me the benefit of completing my degree online and asynchronously, which made it manageable, along with the responsibilities of being a leader in healthcare.

Why did you choose an online program vs. an on-campus one?

I work full-time in Orlando, Florida, and while both online and on-campus degree programs are offered nearby, the UC Master of Science in MLSL degree offered me the flexibility to continue working full-time while going to school.

What made you choose this field of study? Was there a personal reason?

Growing up, I always had a passion for the sciences and knew I wanted to work in health care. I was pursuing a Bachelor of Science as part of my pre-medicine track when I learned about the medical laboratory science profession from a family member. After investigating MLS, I decided to switch tracks to study medical laboratory sciences instead. It fulfilled my love of science and allowed me to use my skills and knowledge to help patients.

Overall, how would you describe the online learning experience? Do you feel you had the full college experience?

The online learning experience has been nothing but positive for me. I was able to work at my own pace and around my work schedule, which was something I looked for when selecting a program. I connected with professionals from around the country and formed friendships and professional contacts that I hope to stay in touch with after the program!

What were your expectations for this program? Were those met?

I expected the program to be a lot of hard work, but to teach me the tools I needed to improve my leadership skills and laboratory science knowledge. While it was hard work, I have learned so much and have been able to apply the information taught to me in my everyday life.

How were your interactions with the professors and staff of this UC Online program?

Everyone that I had the opportunity to interact with online was professional, knowledgeable, and helpful. The professors were great and opened my eyes to new and upcoming trends in the medical laboratory sciences field and how to make evidence-based decisions.

What were your concerns about enrolling? What advice would you have for someone considering a program at UC Online?

My main concerns about enrolling in a master’s program were if I could handle being employed and at school full-time simultaneously. I also had concerns about adapting to being back in school after 11 years.

My advice to anyone considering this or another program at UC Online is: Take the leap! It was completely worth it and went by faster than I thought!

What do you plan to do with your degree?

I plan to continue to use my degree and the knowledge I gained to improve laboratory operations and patient safety and care. I have recently been promoted to Senior Manager at AdventHealth Orlando and plan to continue my leadership journey as I one day desire to be a director.

Yes, I would recommend the University of Cincinnati Online to anyone looking to complete any degree program. The online program afforded me the flexibility to continue to work while completing my program and still getting a high-quality education.
