What is Health Informatics?

As the field of informatics continues to expand, healthcare networks and professionals around the world are embracing innovation in health care and transitioning to more data-driven, technology-based roles. UC’s MHI students learn a wide variety of skills in health IT, business, project management, and data analytics. MHI graduates are highly skilled at managing complex projects and data systems and leveraging data to improve patient care delivery and population health.

The Health Informatics accreditor of University of Cincinnati is the Commission on Accreditation for Health Informatics and Information Management Education (CAHIIM). The College’s accreditation for the Master degree in Health Informatics has been reaffirmed through 2029. MHI Program Outcomes:

  • Demonstrate knowledge in health, health information systems, and health data analytics in order to influence healthcare efficiency, quality, patient care, and population health
  • Apply informatics techniques and tools, computational thinking, and data science methods to impact decision making, healthcare practice, the health of populations, and patients
  • Demonstrate knowledge of major health policy, risk, and legal issues relevant to health informatics in order to articulate needed changes, mitigation strategy, and best practices
  • Identify and apply evidence‐based framework to develop a valid and reliable basis for conclusions, to evaluate health informatics application, and to explain human behavior associated with technology adoption and use
  • Exhibit ethical values, professionalism, and inter-professional collaboration while solving health informatics problems
  • Demonstrate leadership and management knowledge, abilities, and skills to lead changes and manage innovation in healthcare or population health

Program Application Rates and Time-Degree:

  • In 2020-2021, the MHI program accepted 52 applicants and 39 (75%) of those accepted enrolled in the program.
  • In 2021-2022, the MHI program accepted 55 applicants and 33 (60%) of those accepted enrolled in the program.
  • The average time to degree completion for the last two years was six to seven semesters (24-28 months).

The Emerging Field of Health Informatics

Health informatics is a rapidly-growing, interdisciplinary field of study that combines data analytics, technology and innovation with healthcare delivery. Today’s informatics professionals are shaping the future of the healthcare industry through the development and adoption of cutting-edge technological innovations in the medical industry.

The field of health informatics arose out of the Federal mandate for the healthcare industry’s transition to electronic health records (EHR). Today, with more patient and healthcare system data being generated than ever before, the science of health informatics is focused on how technological innovations can be used to harness this unprecedented access to information to improve human health.

On the IT side, health informatics experts are developing new technologies designed to improve care; on the clinical side, informatics specialists are working to ensure that every patient’s data is accurate, complete and readily accessible to the healthcare providers who need it, with the understanding that technology is also giving patients more autonomy and control of their own electronic health records.

UC’s Master of Health Informatics program is focused on the development and mastery of the technical, analytical, leadership, management and communication skills students need to become leaders in the increasingly complex, data-reliant healthcare industry.
