Back to Blog Mastering the Application Process: A Step-by-Step Guide for International Students Blog Share Share on FacebookFollow us on LinkedInShare on PinterestShare via Email As an international student looking to further their education in the United States, you must take many steps to make that happen. The entire process can seem daunting, which is why the University of Cincinnati Online created this resource for you. We’re excited that you’re interested in becoming a Bearcat, so we want to help you every step of the way, so we’ve created a rundown of the general requirements and valuable information you will need to know when applying to UC (University of Cincinnati) as an international student. The National Association of Credential Evaluation Services (NACES) is an association whose members are U.S.-based, independent, nongovernmental organizations that provide credential evaluation services for individuals who have completed education outside the United States. Agencies that are members of NACES are organizations that have proven that they have a knowledgeable staff and years of professional experience in applied comparative education. Now that we’ve cleared that up, you probably want to know what will be evaluated during this process. Academic Requirements Generally, you must meet the academic requirements set forth by the university and the program you are interested in. These requirements usually include a minimum GPA criterion and completion of required education before applying. For example, if you are applying for a master’s program, you will likely need to have already completed an applicable bachelor’s program. English Language Proficiency Demonstrating proficiency in the English language is often necessary for international students. Most universities accept standardized test scores, such as the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) or the IELTS (International English Language Testing System). However, minimum score requirements may vary by university and program, so speak to your Enrollment Services Advisor about specific English Language requirements for your desired program. Credential Evaluation If your previous academic credentials are from an institution outside the United States, you might have to have them evaluated for equivalency. This is where NACES (National Association of Credential Evaluation Services) comes in. NACES supplies evaluation services to decide the U.S. equivalency of your previously completed education. This process can take several weeks, so beginning it as soon as possible is crucial. Enrollment Period and Deadlines When attending any university, adhering to the enrollment periods and deadlines set forth by your specific program is important. In addition, it’s important to be aware of these deadlines as an international student because of the added challenges you may face, such as document translation, evaluation delays, and potential delays in international mail delivery. Like with many other steps listed above, beginning the application process early and staying informed about important deadlines is crucial. What’s Next? To make the entire process run as smoothly as possible, it’s best to begin the process early, gather all required documents in advance, and closely follow the guidelines and deadlines of your desired university and program. In addition, maintaining contact with international student services or the college admissions office can be helpful, especially if you have any questions or concerns. At UC Online, we strive to make things as easy as possible for our current and future students. If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to contact us and request more information. Or you can reach out to one of our amazing Enrollment Services Advisors (ESAs) for more assistance.
