That’s exactly what happened to Andréa Benton when she decided it was time for a change and a fresh start. A serendipitous email led her to the University of Cincinnati’s (UC) 100% online Associate of Arts (AA) in Communication program, a perfect fit for her desire to pursue a new career. Balancing her education with a busy life, Andréa found that UC’s online AA Communication program not only met her high expectations but exceeded them, offering flexibility, supportive faculty, and top-notch instruction. With newfound confidence and a quality education, Andréa is ready to explore exciting opportunities in public relations or the political arena. 1. What motivated you to seek this degree or certificate program? I wanted to do something different, and I thought going back to school would be the best place to start. A day or so after I had this thought, I received an email from UC about their online program and I thought that was serendipitous. 2. Why did you choose an online program vs. on campus? Online schooling has been very convenient for me and my schedule. While it is still a lot of reading, work and studying, I feel more in control of my surroundings, and this allows me to perform better. 3. What made you choose your current field of study? I studied journalism years ago and ended up not going into the field. After years of working in other fields, I needed a change. Communication is a field that has many avenues to pursue for a career. The options with a communication degree are plentiful and varied, and this is great for someone like me who loves variety. 4. How was the admission process? Did you have any trouble applying to the program? The admission process was simple, honestly. Also, you had folks from UC who were with you to help you with the process so if you did have any questions, someone was there ready to help. 5. What were your expectations of the program, and do you feel that they were met? I didn’t know what to expect with an online Communication program, but I have enjoyed my time in this program. I’ve had quality instruction and useful feedback from all my instructors, and they want me to do well. The level of instruction is topnotch, and I have been able to apply what I’ve learned in other aspects of my life – seriously. 6. Overall, how would you describe the online learning experience? Do you feel you had the full college experience? Since I never attended school online before, I wasn’t sure what to expect. I have to say I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of education. There’s a perception that online learning is easy and not as rigorous as in-person learning, but that isn’t true at all! I don’t say this to scare folks away, but I say this so folks don’t think they’re wasting their money with an online program. 7. What are your thoughts on the faculty of this online UC program? I have had great instructors who want me to succeed. They were always available to answer questions or offer feedback or advice. They have all been solid so far, but I must especially thank Dr. Jessica Furgerson and Dr. Nancy Jennings for their guidance and encouragement. My advisors have been FANTASTIC! Mike Roman and Jun Lu have been so helpful with keeping me on track and offering solid advice. 8. What would you say to someone who is considering this or any other online program at UC? If you want a quality education but you have a crazy schedule or anything that may make heading to campus hard, UC’s online programs are a great alternative! 9. What do you plan to do with your degree? I’m leaning towards Public Relations or something in the political arena. 10. Overall, would you recommend the University of Cincinnati’s online program to others? I would recommend UC’s online program to others because you can get a quality education in your own time and without sacrificing other commitments and obligations in your life. It’s also affordable, so that is always a plus! What’s Next?
