Back to Blog Flexibility of Online Bachelor of Social Work Degree is Key to Graduating BlogStudent StoriesUC Online News Share Share on FacebookFollow us on LinkedInShare on PinterestShare via Email Misty McGee has spent her career advocating for people who need representation and support, including in the work she does her job as a Client Rights Officer for Eastway Behavioral Healthcare. Although Misty already had a degree and on the-job-experience, she set her sights on earning a bachelor’s in social work (BSW) and becoming licensed. Having the BSW would help Misty prepare to enter a master of social work program later. Before enrolling at the University of Cincinnati (UC), Misty had started another institution’s program. “After about three weeks, I quickly realized they couldn’t serve a person like me. I work full-time and already had a degree,” she says. Misty contacted a UC admission advisor. After discussing options with the advisor, she knew UC Online’s Bachelor of Social Work program had everything she needed to be successful: It’s designed for people who work full-time and have a busy family life. Seeing First-Hand the Benefits of Online Learning With Misty’s day job and family obligations, she knew an on-campus degree program wasn’t right for her. “I chose online learning because the program is extremely flexible and allows me to earn my degree at times that are convenient for me,” she says. Misty says that being able to incorporate school into her active life versus having to plan her life around the school was a perfect fit. Despite feeling good about choosing UC Online’s bachelor of the social work program, Misty did have a few doubts. “I will be honest,” she says. “I was nervous about how well I would do with online learning. I have always been a good student, and my grades are important.” Misty’s concerns about thriving in an online environment are rooted in never experiencing a fully virtual bachelor’s program like this before. She quickly found out there was nothing to worry about. “I was able to realize my full potential, which was gratifying,” she says. Two other initial concerns of Misty were related to self-motivation and understanding course content without a live instructor. Again, early on, Misty found herself pleasantly surprised with the ease of studying at UC. “The instructors put a lot of thoughtful prep work into the courses,” she says. “They anticipate students’ needs and are available to answer questions by email, online, or phone. I felt very supported by all my instructors and my academic advisor.” Ready to Follow Misty’s Journey to Being a UC Grad? Today, Misty has realized her goal of earning a bachelor’s degree to ready herself for a social work master’s program. Now that she graduated, she reflects on what made UC Online’s Bachelor of Social Work program work so well for her, mentioning flexibility as the biggest benefit. “The flexibility of online learning allowed me to do homework during my daughter’s cheer, dance, and gymnastics practices. I could complete everything without sacrificing my time with her,” she says. Misty calls UC a frontrunner in the online learning world, saying our program empowered her to make her schedule and be fully in control of what time she devoted to her social work education.
