Back to Blog Student Spotlight: Yousef Athamni, Master of Science in Medical Laboratory Science Leadership Student Stories Share Share on FacebookFollow us on LinkedInShare on PinterestShare via Email In the laboratory science field, the University of Cincinnati stands out. Why? It’s because we offer a fully online educational pathway in the laboratory sciences. This means that a student can complete their entire laboratory education, from the undergraduate to doctoral level, through UC’s programs. By completing this pathway, laboratory professionals can expand their knowledge and prepare themselves for high-level career opportunities. One stop along this pathway is the Master of Science in Medical Laboratory Science Leadership (MS-MLSL). This online master’s program builds upon the skillset of practicing laboratory professionals while also strengthening their abilities in leadership, management, education, and research. Upon completion, graduates of the program become more qualified for leadership roles in the laboratory industry and can pursue continued education in the field. A recent MS-MLSL graduate, Yousef Athamni, shared his transformative experience in the program below: Purpose, Pride, and Continuous Growth: Yousef’s Journey in the MS-MLSL Program “The MS-MLSL program is thoughtfully designed to deepen both scientific knowledge and leadership competencies in the field of medical laboratory science. It challenges students to think critically, reflect on their practice, and recognize the value of what we do as medical laboratory professionals. The program elevates the profession, encouraging a sense of purpose, pride, and continuous growth. Throughout the program, the faculty and program directors consistently demonstrated a deep commitment to student success. They were approachable, supportive, and genuinely invested in ensuring every student understood the material. Their emphasis on comprehension over memorization helped build long-term confidence, and their continuous encouragement created an environment where there was little room for self-doubt or failure. Their open-mindedness, flexibility, and student-centered approach were evident in how they listened and responded to our concerns, often providing helpful recommendations and accommodations to support our learning. Speaking from personal experience, I faced additional challenges related to a learning disability and a speech difficulty that persists even in my native language. Initially, I underestimated how supportive and understanding the faculty would be. I now recognize that their willingness to work with each student individually was a key factor in our collective success. Had I embraced this earlier, I might have felt more confident sooner. One thing is certain—when students follow the guidance and recommendations offered by the professors, it becomes not only possible to succeed but difficult to fail. To future students, it may feel overwhelming in the beginning—especially if you have been away from school for years or face personal barriers—but trust the process. It truly becomes easier with time. The experience is not only worth it, but transformational in the most positive way. I can clearly see this transformation in myself. I started with low self-confidence and limited writing skills, but I now take pride in my achievements. My thought process has evolved. My ability to analyze and approach laboratory issues has significantly improved. I have even noticed a difference in how my written communication is received by upper management—my ideas are acknowledged more quickly and with greater respect. This shift is a direct result of the knowledge and professional writing skills I developed through this master’s program.” Yousef’s story serves as an inspiration to any laboratory professional pursuing their master’s degree, and UC’s team is excited to see where his career takes him next!
