UC’s Online Clinical Microbiology Certificate Admission Requirements

Students pursuing admission into the Post-Baccalaureate Certificate in Clinical Microbiology must meet the academic and background requirements outlined below. This program is ideal for individuals seeking to advance their careers through categorical certification in microbiology or gain focused expertise in infectious disease diagnostics and clinical laboratory microbiology.

Prerequisites

  • Baccalaureate degree from a regionally or nationally accredited college or university
    • Must include a major in biological science or chemistry
      — OR —
    • A bachelor’s degree in another field, plus a minimum of 30 semester hours (45 quarter hours) in a combination of biology and chemistry coursework (may be completed within or in addition to the degree)
  • Recommended Coursework
    Example courses to satisfy prerequisites include:

    • Two semesters of general biology with lab
    • Two semesters of general chemistry with lab
    • Two semesters of anatomy and physiology with lab
    • One semester of organic chemistry or biochemistry with lab
    • A semester-long statistics course is preferred to demonstrate math proficiency
  • Additional Requirements
    • Minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5
    • Official transcripts from all colleges and universities attended
    • Two professional reference forms
    • Orientation is required prior to the start of the program
    • Access to a clinical site to complete required immunohematology competencies
  • Notes
    • This certificate supports eligibility for ASCP categorical certification in Microbiology (Route 3)
    • Life Experience Credit may be available to fulfill practicum requirements based on clinical background, subject to review by the Office of Prior Learning Assessment
    • Additional pathways (e.g., Generalist vs. Categorical certificates) may be offered as the program evolves

Transcripts

Submit official transcripts from all schools attended. Transcripts can be sent through online systems such as Parchment to the University of Cincinnati Undergraduate Office of Admissions. This is the preferred method. These transcripts must be official copies of the student’s record.

Professional References
