UC’s Online Immunohematology/Blood Banking Certificate Admission Requirements

Students pursuing admission into the Post-Baccalaureate Certificate in Immunohematology/Blood Banking must meet the academic and background requirements outlined below. This program is ideal for individuals seeking to advance their careers through categorical certification in immunohematology or to gain focused expertise in transfusion medicine.

Prerequisites

  • Admission is open to:
    • Students with a baccalaureate degree from an accredited (regionally or nationally) college/university with a major in biological science or chemistry

— OR —

    • Students with a baccalaureate degree from an accredited (regionally or nationally) college/university with a combination of 30 semester hours in biology and chemistry, which may be obtained within, or in addition to, the baccalaureate degree.
      • Prerequisite coursework should include a strong foundation in the following areas:
        • Biology
        • Anatomy and physiology
        • Chemistry
        • Biochemistry (or Organic Chemistry)
        • Microbiology
        • Immunology
  • Demonstration of math proficiency is required; a semester length course in statistics is preferred. Students may be required to take prerequisite coursework as a condition of their admission.
  • Additional Requirements
    • A 2.5 cumulative GPA is recommended for admission into the certificate program; however, students with lower averages may apply and will be considered for admission on a competitive basis.
    • Official transcripts from all colleges and universities attended
    • Two professional reference forms
    • Orientation is required prior to the start of the program
    • Access to a clinical site to complete required immunohematology competencies
    • Option to apply for Life Experience Credit toward practicum requirements (subject to evaluation)

International Applicants

This is an online program and does not meet federal requirements for international students planning to attend on a visa. International students with questions should contact UC’s International Services at 513-556-4278.

ASCP Technologist Certification Exam

To meet qualifications for the ASCP Technologist certification exam via Route 3, the required biology and chemistry courses must be listed on the official transcript as courses taken in the biology and chemistry departments. Other courses which the applicant feels should be considered as a biological science or chemistry course may be acceptable if the applicant submits proof to ASCP at the time of application for the technologist exam. Only courses taken at the 100 level or above, where the student has earned a passing grade, will count towards the academic requirements. Transcripts

Submit official transcripts from all schools attended. Transcripts can be sent through online systems such as Parchment to the University of Cincinnati Undergraduate Office of Admissions. This is the preferred method. These transcripts must be official copies of the student’s record.
