In the US, the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) predicts that the medical scientists’ workforce will grow by 8% from 2018 to 2028 – faster than the average for all occupations in the US. Further, medical scientists will continue to be needed as they contribute to the development of treatments and medicines that improve human health.

For clinical laboratory technologists and technicians, the BLS notes that employment is projected to grow 11% from 2018 to 2028. An increase in the aging population is expected to lead to a greater need to diagnose medical conditions, such as cancer or type 2 diabetes, through laboratory procedures.

Further, BLS states that jobs for biochemists and biophysicists are projected to grow 6% from 2018 to 2028 with more individuals needed in this field to use the knowledge they have gained from basic research to develop biological products and processes that improve lives.
