What is a Nurse-Midwife?

The University of Cincinnati online MSN nurse-midwifery program is geared toward caring for women’s health with a focus in labor and birth. Recognized as primary care providers, certified nurse-midwives provide a wide range of healthcare services including gynecological care, contraceptive prescriptions and management, birth attendance, and care of the newborn during their first month of life. Certified nurse-midwives are required to have a BSN and MSN with previous RN experience. University of Cincinnati’s MSN Nurse-Midwifery Program

The Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) Nurse-Midwifery online program is designed for working nurses with busy schedules, and our online midwifery program enables you to pursue your professional goals on your own time. To start your MSN at UC, you must hold a BSN with one year of RN experience.

UC’s program is one of the top certified Nurse-Midwifery Programs online, and is nationally recognized for our academic standards, diversity and inclusion efforts, technology application, and research activity. Our programs are taught by doctorally prepared faculty who are practicing nurses, up-to-date clinically.

This program prepares students to take the Midwifery Certification Board (AMCB) to become certified nurse-midwives.

All coursework adheres to our Nurse-Midwifery Program Core Values, Mission, Philosophy and Goals. The degree requires 57 total credit hours, 784 hours of clinicals, 42 lab hours and a site visit to the University of Cincinnati campus.

Career Outlook

The future looks bright for midwives. The demand for this position is expected to increase by 38% between 2022 and 2032, which is significantly higher than the average for all occupations. In addition to working in a growing field, certified nurse-midwives earned a median salary of $125,900  ($60.53 per hour) in 2022 according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
