State Regulations

NC-SARA authorized institution logo

Every state has authority to regulate institutions offering education within the state’s boundaries, including online/distance learning. The need for an institution to seek state authorization for distance learning depends on a combination of the state’s laws and the activities that the program/institution is conducting in that state. Review the Key Considerations regarding State Authorization for online programs.

The University of Cincinnati has been approved by the Ohio Department of Higher Education to participate in the National Council for State Authorization Reciprocity Agreements (NC-SARA) initiative. Participation in SARA provides the University with reciprocity to offer online/distance learning programs to residents of other SARA states (except where noted below). Additional information regarding SARA can be found at NC-SARA.

State Specific Information

For specific information regarding state authorization or to find out which UC online programs are available in your state, please click on your state or territory below. While the university is authorized to operate in other SARA member states, program-specific considerations may be noted.  Some professional programs such as nursing, teacher education or others also fall under the jurisdiction of state professional licensing boards.  If you are considering a program that leads to licensure or certification it is essential that you understand the regulations and requirements for your home state prior to enrolling in any academic program. As a starting point, see the Professional Licensure section below.  Please note that information is subject to change.

Alabama

As an approved SARA institution, University of Cincinnati is in compliance with Alabama regulations to offer programs to residents of the state.

Teacher Education: State authorization to provide a program related to the preparation of teachers or other P-12 school/system personnel does not indicate eligibility for an Alabama certificate.  Applicants for an Alabama certificate based on reciprocity must meet Alabama’s test requirements and submit a valid, renewable professional educator certificate/license issued by another state at the degree level, grade level, and in the teaching field or area of instructional support for which an Alabama certificate is sought and for which Alabama issues a certificate.  Applicants for Alabama certification in an area of administration must also document at least three years of full-time employment as an administrator in a P-12 school system(s). www.alsde.edu

Nursing: State approval of a program to offer Alabama licensed nurses opportunities for advanced degrees does not indicate eligibility for approval to practice as an advance practice nurse in Alabama. Applicants for approval in Alabama are required to meet the Alabama requirements for national certification, graduation from a specific-type program for the advanced practice approval, and completion of the appropriate application. Any program offering a pre-licensure track to Alabama students shall meet the requirements of the Alabama regulations for pre-licensure programs or the graduates may not be eligible to take the national licensure examination required by the Alabama Board of Nursing to practice. www.abn.alabama.gov

Professional Licensure

Professional licensure and certification requirements often vary from state to state.  UC does not guarantee that programs which fulfill Ohio licensure requirements will satisfy the criteria of professional licensure boards in other states or territories. Students from outside the State of Ohio, who are considering a program of study that may lead to professional licensure, should contact the appropriate licensing agency in their state of residence to understand the regulations and requirements for their home state prior to enrolling in any academic program. Refer to UC’s program website and contact the program coordinator for specific program requirements. Eligibility for licensure and/or certification may involve more than successful degree completion.
